Software Engineer Fresher Salary in India: Company-Wise Packages, In-Hand Pay and How to Earn More
MCS Team · 3 Nov 2026 · Career & Interview Prep
Key Takeaways
- A software engineer fresher salary in India usually falls between about ₹3.5 LPA and ₹8 LPA. The type of company you join matters more than anything else.
- Standard fresher roles at large IT services companies (TCS Ninja, Infosys Systems Engineer, Wipro Elite, Cognizant GenC, Accenture ASE) are commonly reported at roughly ₹3.5 to ₹4.5 LPA.
- Premium tracks at the same companies (TCS Digital and Prime, Infosys specialist roles, Wipro Turbo, Cognizant GenC Pro, Accenture Advanced ASE) are reported at roughly ₹6 to ₹11.5 LPA, and you earn them through a harder test or coding round.
- Product companies and global capability centres (GCCs) pay more, often in double digits, but hire far fewer freshers.
- CTC is not your monthly salary. PF, gratuity, variable pay and one-time bonuses are inside the CTC, so your in-hand pay is lower than CTC divided by 12.
What is the software engineer fresher salary in India? For most freshers it is between ₹3.5 LPA and ₹8 LPA, depending on whether you join a standard IT services role, a premium services track, or a product company. Freshers at top product companies and GCCs can earn ₹10 LPA to ₹25 LPA or more, but those seats are few and the selection bar is high.
This guide breaks down fresher packages by company type and by hiring track, explains how CTC turns into in-hand salary, and gives you a 7-step plan to move into a higher package. It is written for B.E./B.Tech, BCA, MCA and B.Sc. graduates looking for their first software job. All company figures below are ranges commonly reported by placement-preparation and salary sites (such as FACE Prep, Jobrise and Instahyre) for 2025-26 hiring. Companies change packages every year, so always go by your offer letter.

Software Engineer Fresher Salary in India: The Quick Answer
Think of fresher pay as three bands. Where you land depends mostly on which kind of company hires you and which hiring track you clear.

| Company type | Typical fresher roles | Commonly reported range (CTC) | How many seats |
|---|---|---|---|
| IT services, standard track | Systems Engineer, Associate Software Engineer, Analyst, Programmer Analyst Trainee | About ₹3.5 to ₹4.5 LPA | Very many (mass hiring) |
| IT services, premium track | Digital, Prime, Specialist Programmer, Turbo, GenC Pro, Advanced ASE | About ₹6 to ₹11.5 LPA | Fewer, test-based |
| Mid-size product companies and startups | Software Engineer, SDE I, Associate Engineer | Varies widely, often ₹6 to ₹15 LPA | Limited |
| Top product companies and large GCCs | SDE I, Software Engineer (new grad) | Often ₹10 to ₹25 LPA or more | Very few, highly competitive |
Most freshers in India start in the first two rows, because IT services companies hire in the largest numbers. That is not a bad start: many engineers move to higher-paying roles after one or two years of real project experience. If you are still deciding which companies to target, start with our list of top IT companies in India for freshers and experienced professionals.
Fresher Salary at Big IT Services Companies, Track by Track
Large IT services companies run national fresher drives with more than one track. You usually take the same online test, and your score or an extra coding round decides which track (and package) you are offered. Here is how the tracks are commonly reported for 2025-26 hiring:
| Company | Standard track | Premium track(s) |
|---|---|---|
| TCS | Ninja: about ₹3.36 LPA | Digital: about ₹7 to ₹7.5 LPA; Prime: about ₹9 to ₹11.5 LPA |
| Infosys | Systems Engineer: about ₹3.6 LPA | Digital Specialist Engineer and Specialist Programmer roles: about ₹6.25 LPA and above |
| Wipro | Elite (Project Engineer): about ₹3.5 to ₹3.8 LPA | Turbo: about ₹6 to ₹6.5 LPA |
| Accenture | Associate Software Engineer: about ₹4.5 LPA | Advanced ASE: about ₹6.5 LPA and above |
| Cognizant | GenC: about ₹4 LPA | GenC Pro: about ₹6.75 LPA; GenC Next/Elevate: higher |
| Capgemini | Analyst: about ₹4 LPA | Senior Analyst / Associate Consultant: about ₹6.5 to ₹7.5 LPA |
Two things stand out. First, the standard tracks across these companies sit close together, roughly ₹3.5 to ₹4.5 LPA, so choosing between them on salary alone makes little difference. Second, the premium tracks pay almost double, and the gap comes from one thing: strong coding and problem-solving in the test. That is the easiest salary jump available to a fresher, and step 3 of the plan below explains how to aim for it.

Product Companies, GCCs and Startups: What Freshers Earn
Product companies build and sell their own software. Global capability centres (GCCs) are the India engineering and technology centres of large global companies. Both usually pay freshers more than services companies, but they hire in much smaller numbers and test harder on data structures, algorithms and projects.
- Top product companies and large GCCs: salary sites report fresher packages commonly in the ₹10 to ₹25 LPA range, and higher at a few top firms. These packages often include joining bonuses and stock (RSUs) that vest over several years, so the first-year cash can be lower than the headline number.
- Mid-size product companies and funded startups: pay varies a lot by company and funding stage. Many pay above the services standard track; some early-stage startups pay less but give faster learning and broader responsibility.
- Entry routes: internships that convert into pre-placement offers (PPOs), new-grad hiring programmes, coding contests and employee referrals. Mass off-campus drives are rare.

CTC vs In-Hand Salary: What You Actually Get Each Month
CTC (cost to company) is everything the company spends on you in a year. Your in-hand salary is what reaches your bank account each month. The gap surprises many freshers, so read the salary breakup (annexure) in your offer letter carefully.

Common parts of a fresher CTC:
- Basic salary: often 35% to 50% of CTC. PF and gratuity are calculated on it.
- HRA and allowances: paid monthly with your salary.
- Employer PF contribution: 12% of basic, which goes to your PF account, not your bank account. Some companies calculate PF on the statutory wage ceiling of ₹15,000 per month instead of the full basic.
- Gratuity: usually shown as 4.81% of basic. You receive it only after completing five years with the company.
- Variable pay or performance bonus: paid quarterly or yearly, and not always 100%.
- One-time items: joining bonus, relocation and insurance premiums. These inflate the first-year CTC but do not repeat.
A simple illustration (not any company's actual structure): take a CTC of ₹4,00,000 with basic at 40% (₹1,60,000). Employer PF (12% of basic, ₹19,200) and gratuity (4.81% of basic, about ₹7,700) are part of the CTC but not paid monthly, which leaves gross pay of about ₹3,73,100. Your own PF (₹19,200) and professional tax (about ₹2,400 a year in many states) are then deducted, leaving roughly ₹3,51,500 a year, or about ₹29,300 a month.
What about income tax? Under the new tax regime announced in Budget 2025, salaried people with taxable income up to ₹12 lakh pay no income tax after the rebate, and there is a standard deduction of ₹75,000. So most fresher salaries pay little or no income tax under the new regime. Rules can change each budget, so check the current year's rules or ask your payroll team.
What Decides Your Fresher Salary?
- Type of company: services, product, GCC or startup, as shown above. This is the biggest factor.
- Hiring track and test score: the same company can offer two or three different packages to freshers from the same batch, based on test and interview performance.
- Coding and problem-solving skill: strong data structures and algorithms open the premium tracks and product company interviews.
- Projects and internships: a real project, a GitHub profile you can explain, or an internship at a product company is often what gets you shortlisted for higher-paying roles.
- Role: software development roles usually pay more than support or testing roles at the same company at the start.
- City: Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai and the NCR have the most high-paying tech roles. Read our guide to IT companies in Bangalore for freshers to see how hubs differ.
- College and campus access: some high-paying companies hire mainly from specific campuses. Off-campus candidates can still get in through tests, contests and referrals, but must apply more actively.
How to Get a Higher Fresher Package: 7 Steps
You cannot change your college, but you can change most of the other factors. Here is a practical plan.

- Pick one target role. Software developer, data analyst, QA automation and cloud support are different paths. Choose one so your resume, projects and preparation all point the same way. Our guide on how to find the right job based on your skills helps you decide.
- Build coding strength every day. Practise one language deeply (Java, Python or C++) and solve problems on arrays, strings, hashing, recursion, trees and basic dynamic programming. An hour a day for three months makes a visible difference.
- Aim for the premium track in mass drives. When you register for TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture or Cognizant drives, prepare for the advanced coding sections, not just aptitude. A strong score can move you from about ₹3.5 LPA to about ₹6 to ₹11 LPA at the same company.
- Build one strong project. One complete project that you can explain end to end beats five tutorial copies. Deploy it, put it on GitHub, and write what problem it solves.
- Make your resume role-specific. Put skills, projects and results first. Follow our resume format for software developer freshers and make sure it passes ATS screening.
- Apply widely to product companies and GCCs too. Do not stop at mass drives. Apply to new-grad and SDE I roles, internships with PPO chances, and ask alumni for referrals. Browse fresh openings on MCS Jobs every day.
- Prepare for the interview and compare offers. Practise HR interview questions for freshers and your project explanation. If you hold two offers, use the checklist below to compare them, not just the CTC.
How to Check a Fresher Offer Before You Sign
Two offers with the same CTC can mean very different monthly pay and very different first years. Check these points before you accept.

- Fixed vs variable: how much of the CTC is fixed monthly pay, and how much depends on performance?
- One-time items: is a joining bonus included in the CTC, and do you have to pay it back if you leave early?
- Service agreement or bond: is there a minimum service period or a penalty for leaving? Read the exact clause.
- Training period: is the full salary paid during training, or a stipend first?
- PF basis: is PF calculated on full basic or on the ₹15,000 wage ceiling? This changes your in-hand pay.
- Location and role: is the location fixed, and is the role development, testing or support?
- Red flags: a genuine company never asks you to pay a fee for training, an offer letter or a laptop. If someone asks, walk away.
